Mortality is not only an animal loss; it is a financial leak. In a 50-animal batch, even 2-3 deaths can remove the profit cushion. Mortality control starts before purchase and continues through transport, quarantine, feeding, and daily observation.

Five control points

  • Source carefully: avoid coughing, dull, lame, very thin, or mixed unknown animals.
  • Transport gently: avoid overcrowding, heat stress, and long delays without water.
  • Quarantine: keep new Mecheri lambs separate for observation before mixing.
  • Feed transition: shift slowly over 7-10 days; sudden concentrate feeding can kill profit.
  • Daily first-hour check: appetite, dung, breathing, standing posture, and water intake.

Housing matters

Good ventilation, dry flooring, clean water, drainage, and enough trough space reduce disease pressure. A closed, wet, ammonia-smelling shed is a mortality risk even with good feed.

When to call for help

Call early for repeated coughing, fever, bloat, severe diarrhoea, lameness, sudden refusal, or multiple animals dull at the same time. Waiting one more day often costs more than treatment.

Recommendation: build mortality control as a system: buy clean, transport gently, quarantine, transition feed slowly, and observe daily. The cheapest mortality is the one prevented before symptoms spread.
